On July 12-18, 2010, New York will host Africa Fashion Week. The week-long affair—which COMPETE Africa is helping to sponsor—will feature exhibitions, industry networking events, sample sales and runway shows from fashion designers all across Africa. One such designer will be Stella Atal, an accomplished artist who employs young African artists in her Ugandan business.

This will actually be the second fashion show featuring African designers in recent weeks. Just last month, COMPETE Africa and the African Cotton & Textile Industries Federation sponsored the Origin Africa Designer Showcase in Nairobi, Kenya. The event matched fashion designers in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda with regional apparel and textile manufacturers.

A great new blog? video blog? It’s sort of hard to pinpoint what Lights Down Low is, which makes me like it even more. They describe it best…

We ask questions like “what kind of color is your work,” “What was childhood like” and “what you would do in the event of an alien invasion?” We ask questions that people like to answer. We’re more interested in the person, the place, the character, and the inspiration behind the beauty of it all. We want to understand and explore every corner. People can be amazing, and we just want to witness that, and share it with you.

Whirled Interactive uses Google Wave to say goodbye to 2009 with music by Temper Trap.

If you don’t know what Google Wave is yet, well it’s almost impossible to explain but the video gives you a preview of what Google hopes will replace email. And if you do have a Google Wave account you’re probably still trying to figure out what to do with it, this could be some inspiration.

Noko Jeans is a new Swedish brand that debuted Friday at a Stockholm department store but was quickly pulled by the PUB department store management out of fear of controversy. The online shop should be up and running any day now but if you snooze, you loose because there were only a little more than a thousand made.

To add to the bizarreness that is North Korea, jeans are banned because they are associated with US imperialism.

An innovative viral marketing approach by UNIQLO promoting its new Heattech clothing line which lets anyone use any mp3 file hosted online and create a new embeddable video widget (UNIQLO calls it a movie) based on the song. Essentially a personilized online commercial. Trying out the song “Comme des Enfants” by Coeur de Pirate and remixed by Le Matos, both of Montréal, to see what happens.
